What is a Psychologist?
According the Australian Psychological Society (APS), Ltd.:
“Psychologists are experts in human behaviour, having studied the brain, memory, learning, human development and the processes determining how people think, feel, behave and react. Psychologists apply their expertise using reliable and scientifically supported methods. Psychological therapies are widely used to treat individuals and families and can also be applied to groups and organisations. “
There are many reasons why people consult a psychologist.
Everyday problems, such as work stress, relationship troubles and coping with illness, can seriously affect your life. Addressing these concerns is vital to enjoying life and good relationships. APS psychologists can help with these situations. They equip people with the skills needed to function better and to prevent problems.
“Psychologists study human behaviour in their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees before undertaking supervised experience and gaining registration. They do not have a medical degree; however, many have postgraduate qualifications to specialise in various aspects of psychology, including mental illness. “Psychologists assist people with everyday problems such as stress and relationship difficulties, and some specialise in treating people with a mental illness. They help people to develop the skills needed to function better and to prevent ongoing problems.”
Why have counselling with a psychologist?
The journey or process of counselling can assist you with a number of issues, conflicts, traumas, etc., as described in SERVICES, Section: Counselling with a Psychologist.
Counselling provides a safe and confidential space in which your issues can be understood, explored, and worked with in effective ways so that you can successfully move through painful, difficult or draining experiences. A psychologist will be able to identify, assess, and work with any presenting mental health issues that may be a part of one’s difficulty (within their area of competence and specialty). Often people choose a psychologist as their counsellor for the that Medicare rebates that apply along with being able to trust they are with someone who has undergone rigorous postgraduate training and registration, and is abreast of latest research and development on what works and why.

What is a Coaching? What is transpersonal coaching?
The International Coach Federation defines coaching as:
“…partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential…”
According to Transpersonal Coach and Co-Founder of the Institute of Transpersonal Coaching, Donna Czupryna:
“Transpersonal Coaching offers you a reflective and solution-focused space in which you can explore what is most important to get out of your life and how to create that, both in a practical sense and in your personal growth. We begin with a holistic approach to understand your current situation, and explore the future you desire. We then embark upon the transformational journey of crafting this reality, inner and outer, through various techniques, a strong coaching partnership, exploring the expressions of your deepest nature, and through harnessing your untapped resources.
“Coaching holds a dynamic space to explore questions such as: ‘Who am I?’, ‘What do I want?’, ‘What is the way forward?’, ‘How will I get there?’ and ‘Who do I wish to become?’”
What is the underpinning philosophy?
“Coaching begins with an assumption that you, as a person, are whole and resourceful with a wealth of inner wisdom and capability within you. Coaching in a transformational and holistic sense particularly means that you are truly regarded from the depth of your being and the whole of your life is taken into an integrated consideration. A transpersonal approach offers a rich space within which to explore that which leads to higher self-awareness and aliveness, and sense of partnership in the co-creation of your life path.”
What is the nature of the coaching relationship?
“Your transpersonal coach aims to engage with the wisest, highest part of you. Given that action is equally important in the process, you are also kept on track to help you make desired changes and measurable steps in your life, in the right direction.
“The power of coaching is built upon the momentum of regular contact, usually weekly sessions for at least two months, or three sessions per month for a minimum of three months. The impact of the coaching relationship is intended to carry into your life in between sessions. As your daily living unfolds, your coaching process is still in motion, supporting you along the way. Power is granted to this co-creative relationship itself, not to the coach. The effectiveness of the coaching relationship is also built upon the mutual trust, respect, responsibility, and authenticity within the coaching alliance.”
How is coaching different from counselling?
“Coaching and therapeutic approaches can complement each other, taking people through times of recovery (counselling) and times of creative forward movement (coaching), and in this way a person may utilise one then the other. Coaching emphasises the future whilst counselling helps to alleviate the impact of our past. Having said that, the healing nature of therapy can also be experienced in a high quality coaching relationship, and the empowering nature of coaching can also be a result within counselling, so there can be an overlap between their outcomes. Simply put, it may be time to utilize a coaching process when your ability and focus is on actualizing your potential, exploring the nature of your soul, dreaming a future life design, looking into fresh solutions, and for reaching clear goals/outcomes.”
On distinguishing coaching from therapy the ICF (www.coachfederation.org 2010) states:
“Professional coaching is a distinct service which focuses on an individual's life as it relates to goal setting, outcome creation and personal change management. ..Coaching can be distinguished from therapy in a number of ways. First, coaching is a profession that supports personal and professional growth and development based on individual-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is forward moving and future focused. Therapy, on the other hand, deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or a relationship between two or more individuals. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past which hamper an individual's emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways. Therapy outcomes often include improved emotional/feeling states. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one's work or personal life. The emphasis in a coaching relationship is on action, accountability and follow through.”
